"From the President"

President1 imageI hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy (and safe) New Year’s celebration. I continue to be excited about what our chapter accomplishes each year and its continued impact on the lives of Airmen past, present and future.

In November, AFA Langley hosted some terrific activities. Mr. Larry Averbeck (ACC/A10) spoke at our Veteran’s Day chapter luncheon, where we were honored by guests from the Purple Heart Association. Purple Heart recipients from the Vietnam conflict spent time with our members and guests sharing their stories about the Vietnam conflict. First-hand accounts are so important to share and pass on as these events fade further into the past. Today’s young Airmen in their first years of active duty view the Vietnam conflict just as my generation viewed World War II—it was a war that occurred 25 to30 years prior to our births. It is imperative that we seek out those heroes who served, thank them and encourage them to share stories from the conflicts of their eras—especially to those who are or will wear the uniform in the future.

President image1-1I wanted to give a special shout out to members of the 1st Fighter Wing. Early last month they were the recipients of the Air Force Historical Foundation’s Doolittle Award. The award recognizes "a unit that has displayed bravery, determination, discipline, esprit de corps, and superior management of joint operations while accomplishing its mission under extremely difficult and hazardous conditions in multiple conflicts, and thus has made a sustained, significant contribution to Air Force President image2-1history.” Maj Gen (r) Rich Shook and I had the privilege of accompanying members of the Wing to Washington DC for the presentation of the Award at the Air Force Memorial—an amazing venue for awards presentations. Additionally, the Chapter also sponsored dinners for 50 Airmen from the Wing to attend the 2018 Doolittle Award and Historical Foundation Honorees reception.

New for us, AFA Langley sponsored the Regional JROTC Drill Competition held in December. This event has become an important part of our Chapter now that AFA Tidewater officially has merged with AFA Langley. Eight high schools participated in the regional competition—seven of which are new to our chapter’s area of responsibility. The teams compete in a variety of events including Honor Guard, armed and unarmed drill, and inspection (during which they are asked many general knowledge questions). The preparation for these young competitors is rigorous. The regional competition is held in December and followed by the State competition in April. AFA Langley will again sponsor these events but is also working new initiatives to further support today’s cadets that will become our future leaders.

We already have a busy 2019 calendar ahead with of us with the upcoming AFA National 2019 Air Warfare Symposium in late February and our local 2019 Airpower Symposium just around the corner April 11-13. Please mark your calendars! This year’s theme for the 2019 Airpower Symposium is "Operationalizing Cyber”. We encourage you to take the time to attend these valuable events—as a professional development opportunity as well as a way of helping us to continue to provide our level of support to our community in the future.
