"General Spencer Speaks at October Chapter Meeting"

Spencer article imageThe Langley Chapter was honored to host General (Ret) Larry Spencer as our speaker at the October Chapter meeting. His remarks covered not only his new position as National AFA President, but also reached back to his last position on active duty as the Air Force Vice Chief of Staff. He touched on the problems the Air Force faces maintaining legacy weapon systems; the continuous push for divestiture and modernization across the Air Force in fighter, bomber, tanker, trainer, ICBM and ISR systems and platforms; and, the competition among the services for a shrinking DoD budget.

To transition to his current position, General Spencer stressed that AFA will continue to advocate for a strong Air Force that will be ready to meet the challenge of the future. He thought back to his time as a young enlisted member, and later a junior officer in the Air Force ... he could not remember anyone talking with him about the value of being a part of a professional organization such as the Air Force Association. General Spencer is taking on this issue in his tenure as President. He plans to stress "getting the word out" about the value of AFA to all members of the Air Force. He compared AFA to the AUSA (Association of the US Army) and notes that AFA does not seem to hold the same position of esteem as the AUSA does in the Army. He is immediately stressing the need to grow our membership so that we have a stronger voice of advocacy for airpower as well as the welfare of our airmen. General Spencer's goal is that every member of the Air Force will be an AFA member!

The Langley Chapter is excited to serve as a test chapter for the National initiative of providing one-year free trial memberships in pursuit of the "Every Airman a Member” goal. The program has already begun to show results and reflect changing membership demographics. The Langley Chapter is eager to see how the AFA begins to transform under General Spencer's leadership and remain a continued voice advocating for Airpower.
