"From the President"

President1 imageAs I sit here and write for this quarter’s newsletter, Hurricane Florence is bearing down on the east coast of the United States. While we in Virginia appear to have missed the worse of this extremely dangerous storm, those in North and South Carolina do not appear to be so lucky. By the time this letter is published the storm will be gone but it is likely those in the hurricane’s path will be dealing with the aftermath of that massive storm for weeks and months to come. Please keep those who suffer the effects of the storm in your thoughts and prayers, especially now and through the winter months. I would also like to point out that there are currently over 200 Airmen from the Virginia Air National Guard mobilized, deployed and ready to respond should the effects of the hurricane impact citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

On a lighter note, we have five chapter members preparing to travel up to National Harbor, Maryland for the 71st AFA National Convention. This year is special because the Langley Chapter will be receiving the D.W. Steele Award for being the Top Chapter in AFA. This award was made possible because we have so many individuals willing to step up and help us perform our mission to educate, advocate and support those Airmen in and out of uniform. Thank you all for you work this past 12 months. I’m proud of all of you who played a part.

At the same time, get ready for another busy year. We will be holding a Leadership Event at the Langley Theater on 4 Oct when we will welcome Gen (r) Larry Spenser, former Vice Chief of Staff of the AF and President of the AFA and CMSgt (r) Gerald Murray former CMSAF from out of town and CMSgt (r) Marcia Davis former financial management functional manager at ACC who will provide their perspectives on a range of leadership topics. It will be a great event. Looking farther down the road, we will have the Wounded Airmen 5K Run on the Runway on 27 Oct at 0900. On 8 Nov, we will host Congressman Rob Whitman for our Veteran’s Day Chapter Meeting.

I believe the Awards Committee got it right, we do have the best chapter in the Air Force Association. Come out and join us and become a part of this amazing group. Not only will you be around some great individuals but you’ll have a chance to give back to other Airmen and I promise you will learn something along the way. See you in October and please remember those in the path of Hurricane Florence.
