"Virginia State AFA EXCOM Meeting"

Virginia afa article imageThis past November, I had the great opportunity to represent the Langley Chapter at the Quarterly Virginia State Meeting held in Winchester, VA. Throughout the day, State EXCOM representatives provided detailed briefs with important information and upcoming deadlines. Additionally, each Chapter provided a breakdown of activities and milestones accomplished over the past quarter. I was thrilled to talk about all of the great things our Chapter has accomplished and all of our upcoming events, especially the Langley AFA Airpower Symposium in April, 2016. Also, this provided me a great opportunity to hear what other Chapters have been up to and gather some new ideas to bring back to ours.

One of Langley’s finest (and current State VP of Aerospace Education), Mark Douglas, discussed various topics regarding education programs, but specifically focused on a new education initiative with Civil Air Patrol (CAP). This initiative will allow Chapters to sponsor K-6 educators with the free Aerospace Connections in Education (ACE) program. This is a great opportunity for our members to be involved in classrooms and promote STEM education, while also raising awareness of the AFA in our community. We hope to begin this program soon within our Chapter so be on the lookout for upcoming information! Also, Virginia Teacher of the Year nominations will be due in April. If you know of any teachers within the local area going above and beyond their normal duties, please let us know. We will be opening the nominations for Teacher of the Year very soon in the new year.

During the meeting, Langley Chapter representatives discussed our new texting initiative to support the "Every Airmen a Member” trial. Earlier this year, Langley was selected as one of three chapters nationwide to participate in this initiative in which we’re able to hand out FREE trial Ememberships to any Airmen interested. In efforts to encourage quick and easy registration, we’ve created a text-based registration program allowing anyone interested to simply text EVAM to a local number (757-644-1881) to receive all the information needed to register for a membership. To broaden this texting opportunity, the State created a subcommittee (led by our very own Steven Byran) to enhance this initiative and make it available for all chapters within the State. These efforts will help all chapters provide immediate membership information to interested members.

The day wrapped up with brief comments from our Virginia State President, Region President, and the AFA Chairman of the Board. All three discussed various organizational challenges facing membership and involvement, and what Chapters can do to better themselves in these areas. Our Chapter continues to do great things within our own community, and these efforts are being recognized by State Leadership. Continue the great work, and encourage your friends, co-workers, and family to become involved. Hope to see you at our next Chapter meeting! Hannah Richmond, Langley AFA Chapter Executive Vice President
