AFA Emerging Leader Program

Leader image 200pxThree years ago, the Air Force Association started a program designed to groom promising AFA members for leadership positions at the chapter, state, region and national level. The program runs for a year from October of one year through September of the following year. During that year, these emerging leaders (ELPs) witness or participate in a wide range of activities to learn about AFA structure, field operations, the national staff, and the major issues facing the Association.

The current program kicks off with attendance at the region and state president’s meeting held up in Washington DC. Here the ELPs, along with the incoming and returning region and state presidents, are introduced to all AFA programs as well as the way information flows back and forth between the chapters all the way up to the national staff. By this time, ELPs are assigned to a national committee or council and will become part of that team for the year. ELPs are also paired up with a current or former national director who will mentor the individual over the course of the year.

The work on the committee or council varies depending on assignment, but most will begin holding meetings in the November or December timeframe and will meet twice a month each month until the September National Convention. In addition, the ELP will speak on a monthly basis with their mentor to develop a senior leader perspective on the activities of the Association.

The last two activities of the program are the good deals and both are funded by AFA. All of the ELPs are invited down to Orlando in the first quarter of the year to participate in the AFA Board Meeting held in conjunction with the Air Warfare Symposium. Here the ELP gets a first-hand look at the Association’s governance in action. One of the more interesting parts of that event occurs when the Chairperson of the council or committee the ELP has been working on briefs the Board on the activities to date and sets the expectation for the remainder of the year. The final activity occurs in September at the fall Board meeting and the National Convention. Here the ELPs get a second chance to see the Board in action and participate as a delegate at the National Convention. Immediately following the National Convention is the kickoff of the Air, Space and Cyber Conference at the Gaylord. If the ELP chooses to stay for the conference, he or she gets to rub elbows with the senior Air Force leadership and industry executives. The conference includes addresses by senior government officials including the Air Force Secretary and the Air Force Chief of Staff, panel discussion on hot issues facing our military, and a technology exhibition showing off the latest in military hardware and equipment.

The goal of the Emerging Leader Program is for graduates to take leadership positions at all levels of the Association. This week at the Convention, an ELP from the first class—our own Tyler Johnson—was elected to be the next Central East Region President. He will be the most senior ELP to date. In addition to Tyler, yours truly (Mark ‘Buster’ Douglas) completes this year’s program and will become the new Langley Chapter President in October when Tyler assumes the Region presidency. We are also very fortunate to have two ELPs in the next class, Hannah Richmond and Gabbe Kearney.

If this opportunity sounds interesting to you, come out and join us. We are looking for motivated individuals to join our team at the Chapter level. Talk to any of our current officers and we will find a role that interests you on our team.

Mark Douglas, Incoming Langley Chapter President
