Summer Luncheons

TOY buckley 150pxTOY grube 150pxWe had quite the lineup for summer luncheons and really were quite spoiled. First in July we were privileged to hear Janet E. Sellars, the Director of the Office of Education at NASA Langley Research Center. She also helped present our Teacher of the Year awards to Erick Grube from Tabb High and Tracy Buckley from Mount Vernon Elementary. It was truly an honor to recognize some of the area’s finest role models and teacher, and to have Ms. Stellars present with us.

As we moved into August we were honored to have now retired General Frank Gorenc, former Commander of USAFE to come and talk. General Gorenc gave his perspective on threats facing our Air Force today, Quotes: "Change is always in the air and has the innovation needed to keep our Air Force strong.” "President Putin is the only real threat to American security right now.” In 2013, when Gen Gorenc assumed his command in Europe, the advise and assist mission was the primary discussion for Lunch image 150pxUSAFE. Since 2014 we have seen Russia invade Crimea, the start of ISIS, ebola in Africa … only to be followed by domestic terrorism throughout Europe, BREXIT, and a coup in Turkey recently. Change is always in the air.

Here’s a paraphrase of some of his remarks … Technology has changed the way we execute war and Airmen, coupled with technology and innovation, are the key to success. Everyone braced for a pivot to the Pacific but it was more of a pirouette because we are right back in the same fights before we pivoted. The world is constantly playing chess with Putin, but he plays like a pigeon. He comes in, knocks over the pieces, craps all over the board, struts around, and brags about winning. In the end, he is subversive to NATO and the only nuclear power that is truly a threat to peace. The enemies of America fear the US Air Force and our ability to touch everything. ISIS doesn’t fear the army – they fear the drones that can kill them with Hellfires. Airpower enables 100 to zero margins of victory, because any loss is no longer acceptable.
