From the Chapter President

We have an amazing AFA Chapter! We’re off to a fast start … building our team; ramping up for an eventful year ahead; and, I’m honored to have the privilege of leading this motivated group intent on making a difference in our community. We”re approaching the New Year with two major events in mind that will impact the Langley community over the course of the year.

Buster douglasFirst, in 2016, we marked 100 years of flight at Langley Field. In 2017 we will mark the 100th birthday of two Langley fighter squadrons. The 27th FS, the oldest fighter squadron in the Air Force, and the 94th FS were both formed prior to the United States entry into World War I. Our chapter is working with AFA National to recognize this milestone at the Air Warfare Conference in March. Marking milestones like this is important for our Air Force. Not only do we get a chance to highlight our front-line warriors to a grateful nation but we get a chance to remind people both inside and outside the Air Force of the sustained commitment over the last century by countless heroes who dedicated their lives to defending our freedom. Many of these heroes have paid the ultimate price both in war and in preparing for war.

The second event on our radar is the change of command at ACC when Gen ‘Hawk’ Carlisle passes the flag to Gen ‘Mobile’ Holmes in March. For Gen Carlisle, this assignment culminates a 39 year Air Force career of exceptional service to the country. For Gen Holmes, he takes over the awesome responsibility of preparing our combat air forces for a wide-range of combat scenarios in a very uncertain environment.

I want to wrap up my first Chapter President’s Message by saying thank you to my predecessor, Tyler Johnson. Tyler had a vision when he took over this Chapter in 2014. He wanted to reach out to our local Total Force Airmen and make them the focus of our Chapter activities. His vision of AFA was to make it a professional development organization, a leadership laboratory and an active organization meeting the needs of our Airmen. Mission accomplished. Now we need to move the ball even farther down that path.
