"Virginia AFA State Meeting"

The Langley Chapter hosted the 2017 fourth quarter State EXCOM meeting at the Ford’s Colony Country Club in Williamsburg. The meeting brings Chapter presidents from across the state together with the State officers to discuss issues impacting AFA chapters and members now and in the future. We had an opportunity to welcome our own Ken Spencer as the new Virginia State President. He was elected last spring for the first of two one-year teams in the office. Ken is a regular at out chapter events so congratulate him for taking on that very important office.

Virginia afa bannerThere were two items of discussion I want to share with you from the meeting. First, we had a briefing from Andre Provoncha about the Williamsburg Aviation Scholarship Program (WASP). WASP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping high school students with a strong desire to pursue an aviation career in the cockpit to earn their private pilot’s license. This 13 month program covers 100% of the cost of ground school, flights, flight instruction and FAA checkride. Our Air Force and our nation are facing a severe pilot shortage now and in the coming years. The efforts of organizations like WASP are vital in addressing this problem.

The second issue I want to bring to your attention deals with membership and leadership challenges facing many of our state’s smaller chapters. The Tidewater Chapter in particular is facing leadership challenges this year and beyond. Their current President is stepping down and they have no one to step in behind him. The state has proposed and we are now discussing merging the Tidewater Chapter with the Langley Chapter. We are still working out the details between the EXCOM organizations and I will brief the chapter at one of our monthly meetings before any moves become official. The Tidewater Chapter does great work with the JROTC units on the south side and we’ve worked with them in the past on a number of projects. We are going to put a plan together that allows them to continue that work as we continue the programs near and dear to our hearts. More to follow on this.

Events culminated with a dinner at the Ford’s Colony Country Club. We were honored to have General (ret) Frank Gorenc, former USAFE Commander and current AFA Langley Chapter member as our speaker. The event capped off a very productive weekend. The next State meeting will be hosted by the Roanoke Chapter in January. (Reported by "Buster” Douglas)
