"From the President"
I hope you all had a chance to spend time with family and to give
thanks for the privilege of living in this great country with the
freedoms we enjoy … and for the men and women, past and
present, who won and preserve those freedoms enumerated in our
Constitution. We are truly blessed living in the United States of
We certainly had some great events this past quarter highlighted by the 100 Year
Anniversary of the 1st Fighter Wing. The unit was formed as the 1st Pursuit Group at the
time the US was preparing for entry into the First World War. The 1st Fighter Wing
heritage includes the Layette Escadrille -- those brave individuals who volunteered to serve
the cause of freedom even before the US entry into the war -- as well those aviation
pioneers who captured the nation’s imagination fighting for the first time in the third
dimension under the US flag in that same conflict. Men like Frank Luke Jr. and Eddie
Rickenbacker laid the foundation for today’s Airmen in the 1st Fighter Wing. The Airmen
of the 1st Fighter Wing serving today are cut from that same mold and they carry on the
tradition begun just over a century ago. You can read more about this event in Rich
Shook’s article on Page 3.
Looking forward, we’ve got a lot to be excited about. As you will see later in this issue,
we will be taking three Langley Airmen with us to Orlando for the Air Warfare
Symposium. This is a first for us. This symposium provides a professional development
opportunity you won’t find anywhere else. These Airmen will have a chance to hear from
Air Force senior leadership and industry on the future of our Service and they will have the
chance to rub elbows with Airmen from around the country. Please ask them about their
experience when they get back—I’m sure they will have a lot to talk about.
Mark your calendars! The 2018 Airpower Symposium will be held in conjunction with the
Langley Air Show during the week of May 14th. We’re just beginning the planning process
so you can look forward to more information in the coming months.
Finally, from the entire AFA Langley Chapter EXCOM, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah
and Happy New Year.
President, Langley AFA Chapter
